'นักบวชอิสลาม' มีรากฐานจากซูฟี การบวชอิสลามที่แท้จริงไม่ใช่เพียงการงดเว้นอาหาร แต่ต้องรู้จักการ Tasawwuf และ 'Zuhd' (บำเพ็ญตบะ) บวกกับหมั่น 'Dhikr' (การเอ่ยนามพระผู้เป็นเจ้า)

นักบวชอิสลามในภาษาอังกฤษคือ 'Islamic cleric' อิสลามมีนักบวชที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้นำจิตวิญญาณ เทศนา และตัดสินข้อเท็จจริงตามหลักกฎหมายอิสลาม
